Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Mike Pelfrey threw seven shutout innings and Wilson Batista drove in five runs with a pair of homers, leading the Binghamton Mets to a 5-1 win over the Reading Phillies at FirstEnergy Stadium Thursday. The B-Mets, winners of back-to-back games, took two of three in the series.
Batista hit the first of his homers leading off the third, a solo shot off Reading lefty Gio Gonzalez that gave Binghamton (25-35) a 1-0 lead before the B-Mets put the game away in the fourth. After Gonzalez (2-6) walked Rashad Eldridge, Mike DiFelice and Pelfrey to load the bases, up came Batista, who hit a grand slam over the left-centerfield fence that put Binghamton up 5-0.
Meanwhile, Pelfrey shut down the Reading offense, allowing just two hits and a walk, striking out seven. After allowing two to reach in the first, Pelfrey (1-1) retired 19 of the final 20 to face him, picking up his first win as a B-Met.
Reading (24-34) scored an unearned run in the eighth off Ivan Maldonado. After Jason Jaramillo and Carlos Leon singled, Michael Bourn hit into a fielder's choice that forced Leon at second. However, shortstop Corey Ragsdale threw wildly to first trying to nab Bourn, allowing Jaramillo to score.
Friday, the B-Mets continue their six-game road trip, opening a three-game series at Bowie. Miguel Pinango (0-3, 4.16) gets the ball for Binghamton against southpaw Richard Stahl (1-7, 4.70) of Bowie. Game time is 7:05 from Prince Georges Stadium with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the broadcast at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
