Harrisburg Senators game notes

June 8, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

Today's Game... Tonight is the rubber game of the three-game series with Connecticut. The Sens and Defenders have split the first two games and tonight RHP Kip Bouknight goes for the Sens against RHP Garrett Broshuis for Connecticut. The Senators are looking for their second straight series win while Connecticut is looking for their first series win since taking two of three games against Binghamton May 17 & 18.

Last Time Out... Connecticut jumped to an early 3-0 lead on Wednesday night and was able to hang on for a 5-3 win over the Senators. Aaron Sisk homered, his second home run in as many days, a two-run shot in the first to make it 3-0. The Defenders tacked on a run in the fourth inning to make 4-0 before the Senators started their comeback. With two outs in the fourth the Senators had four straight hits, two of them run scoring hits, to cut the lead to 4-2. In the sixth, they closed the gap to 4-3 on an rbi pinch-hit double by Melvin Dorta, but that was as close as they would get.

Connecticut... The Defenders led the Northern Division for much of the early season despite not having much of an offensive punch. Connecticut was 13-8 in April with a 2.64 ERA. Even though they were just 14-15 in June, the pitching was still solid with a 3.33 ERA. The five runs the Defenders scored last night nearly equal the runs they had scored in their previous seven games (six). And in those seven games they had been shut out four times.

Heading to DC... When Alex Escobar was called up to the Nationals he became the third Senators player in the past two seasons to go directly from Harrisburg to Washington. Last year Ryan Zimmerman and Darrell Rasner went directly to the Nationals. Shawn Hill pitched one game for New Orleans but then was called up to the Nationals to make a start against the Dodgers on May 27 and will make another start tonight at Atlanta.

Heading Home... With their win last night, the Senators are 20-9 at home overall and 10-1 at home against Northern Division opponents.

Players, Players, and more Players... Through barely two months of the season the Senators have already used 40 players. Last year, the Sens had 53 different players on the roster, including a handful of moves prior to the season's last series. There have been 22 separate moves including Robert Fick being placed with the Sens on a major league rehab assignment.
