Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Bowie's James Johnson worked eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits, to lead Bowie to a 1-0 win over the Thunder at Waterfront Park on Thursday night. The loss drops Trenton back under .500 at 29-30.
Bowie (26-32) scored the game's only run in the 2nd Inning off Trenton starter Phil Hughes. 1B Leo daigle doubled with one out. 3B Tripper Johnson followed with an RBI single. Hughes (2-3) took the loss allowing one run on five hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four. J.B. Cox kept the Thunder in the game with three shutout innings of relief following Hughes.
But Johnson was the story of the night. He allowed a single to trenton SS J.T. Stotts with one out in the 2nd Inning and then retired the next 16 straight hitters to carry a one-hit shutout into the 9th Inning. After allowing a leadoff single to C Omir Santos, Johnson was pulled in favor of Marino Salas. The Thunder were able to get pinch-runner Vince Faison to 3rd Base, but fly outs by Gabe Lopez and Bronson Sardinha ended the game. Johnson (6-3) had one walk and four strikeouts in the win. Salas earned his 13th save with the scoreless 9th Inning.
Trenton begins a three-game series with Reading on Friday. Tyler Clippard (2-7, 4.21) starts for Trenton in the opener against Reading's Allen Davis (1-4, 3.77).
