Kings Recall Hnilicka; Monarchs Recall Chouinard

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have recalled goaltender Mathieu Chouinard and signed goaltender Rick Laurendeau to a professional tryout agreement, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced today. The Monarchs made the moves after the Kings recalled goaltender Milan Hnilicka and placed left wing Kip Brennan on injured reserve (retroactive to December 1) due to a charley horse earlier today. Hnilicka, 30, has appeared in eight games with the Monarchs this season. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound native of Litomerice, Czech Republic, has a 3-5-0 record, a 2.72 goals-against-average and a .897 save percentage. Originally selected by the New York Islanders in the fourth-round (70th overall) in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, Hnilicka has a 29-66-13 record, a 3.30 goals-against-average and a .908 save percentage in 119 career NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers and the New York Rangers. The Kings acquired Hnilicka on September 15 from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for future considerations.
Brennan, 23, has appeared in 10 games with the Kings this season. He has one point -- his first NHL goal -- and 28 penalty minutes, the second most on the team. The 6-foot-4, 228-pound native of Kingston, Ontario, suffered the injury during the Kings-Dallas Stars game on November 30 in Dallas. He has missed the last six games. In 33 career NHL games -- all with the Kings -- Brennan has one goal and 107 penalty minutes.
Chouinard, 23, has appeared in eight games with the Monarchs this season. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound native of Boisbriand, Quebec, has a 2-2-0 record, a 2.56 goals-against-average and a .901 save-percentage. He also has a 1-0-0 record, a 2.00 goals-against-average and a .931 save-percentage in one appearance with the Royals this season. Originally selected by the Ottawa Senators in the first-round (15th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Chouinard has appeared in 37 career American Hockey League games with the Monarchs, the Binghamton Senators, and the Grand Rapid Griffins, recording a 15-14-1 record, a 2.45 goals-against-average and a .899 save-percentage. Chouinard, who signed a free agent contract with the Kings last summer, will rejoin the Monarchs in Bridgeport on Saturday, December 13. The Monarchs are scheduled to play the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
Laurendeau, 31, served as an emergency goaltender for the Monarchs last year, backing up goaltender Jeff Sanger when the Monarchs traveled to the Worcester Centrum Centre for a game against the Worcester IceCats on April 4, 2003. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound native of Manchester, New Hampshire, played collegiately at Plymouth State College from 1990-94.
The Monarchs take on the Utah Grizzles for the first time in franchise history tonight at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Monarchs tonight will also hold their Third Annual Teddy Bear Toss during the game. Fans are encouraged to take stuffed animals to the game and throw them onto the ice during the second intermission. The stuffed animals will then be donated to Child Health Services and Easter Seals.
