Springfield Falcons News Release
Albany, NY â Defenseman Igor Knyazev scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period as the Springfield Falcons skated to a 3-3 deadlock with the Albany River Rats at Pepsi Arena on Friday night. Forwards Erik Westrum and Chris Ferraro also scored for Springfield. Jean-Marc Pelletier made 30 saves in the Falcons' net. With the tie, the Falcons are unbeaten in their last three contests (1-0-2).
Knyazev evened the game on a sharp-angled shot from the left wing boards with 9:43 remaining in regulation. The goal was the defenseman's first tally of the season.
Albany connected twice early in the third period to leap-frog from a one-goal deficit to a 3-2 lead. Rats veteran left wing Joe Hulbig's shot from the top of the left wing face-off circle found the net just 22 seconds into the period. Defenseman Krisjanis Redlihs followed with the only power-play goal of the contest with a shot from the point 8:02 later.
The River Rats struck first in the game with 5:30 remaining in the opening period. Forward Greg Crozier scored with a wrist shot from the left wing face-off dot for his fourth goal of the season.
The Falcons took a lead with a pair of markers in the middle frame. Westrum spun away from the boards with the puck just inside the blue line of the Albany zone and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Rats goaltender Scott Clemmensen, who appeared to be screened by his teammates, to tie the game at the 12:24 mark.
Ferraro made the score 2-1 with his fourth goal of the campaign 5:34 later. On the goal, Ferraro followed up on a backhand attempt by Krystofer Kolanos, who had carried the puck around an Albany defenseman and to the front of the net.
Ferraro's goal marked the 398th point of his AHL career.
Kolanos had the best chances to win the game for Springfield in overtime after first taking a centering pass from Ferraro and later after receiving a drop pass from Westrum, but Clemmensen made a pair of sparkling saves to keep the game tied.
Springfield outshot the River Rats, 41-33, in the contest.
The Falcons own a record of 2-1-4 in overtime games this season. Each of the team's four ties has been by a score of 3-3.
The Falcons will host the Portland Pirates at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday evening in a 7:35 pm contest. For ticket information, please call the Falcons' team office at (413) 739-3344.
