Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings loaded the bases with one out in the eighth trailing 4-2, but Burlington right-hander Chris Mederos struck out Matt Cerione and Ramon Morla and then worked a scoreless ninth for the save, leading the Bees to a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field.
LumberKings' left-hander James Paxton allowed two runs, one earned over the first five innings and pitched his way out of jams in the first, second and fifth innings. The Bees loaded the bases with none out in the first but scored only once on a Jose Rivero sacrifice fly. Poised to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth with runners at second and third and none out, the Bees were instead turned away by Paxton. He induced a ground ball out of Nino Leyja that rolled to drawn-in shortstop Marcus Littlewood who then threw Tyreace House at the plate, picked Leyja off attempting to steal second and then struck out Rivero looking at a curveball.
The Kings scored twice off Bees' left-hander Jacob Brown in the third inning, tying the game as Cerione lined a two-run single to right-center to score Shaver Hansen and Stefen Romero. Clinton's bid for a lead fell short, however, as Brown got Ramon Morla to ground out, stranding runners at second and third.
Brown (W, 4-0) didn't allow another opportunity as he yielded just those two unearned runs on six hits over 6.0 innings while striking out six.
Kings' left-hander Anthony Fernandez (L, 1-2) took over in the sixth and gave up the go-ahead run. Josh Whitaker singled the opposite way moved to second after a single by Wade Kirkland. Daniel Petitti bounced what should have been the final out of the inning to third-baseman Morla, but his throw to second base got away from Hansen to score Whitaker.
Burlington added a run on Yordy Cabrera's RBI single in the seventh and another on Whitaker's RBI double in the ninth. Bees' right-hander Mike Hart (H, 2) loaded up the bases on two walks and an error, but Mederos (S, 4) then came on to close the door.
Cerione finished 1-for-4 with two RBI to lead the LumberKings, who fall to 1-5 against the Bees with their second-straight loss.
The LumberKings (9-22) finish the series with Burlington (22-7) tomorrow night at 6:30 PM. Right-hander Forrest Snow (1-3, 5.12) is scheduled to make his team-leading seventh start for Clinton while Midwest League ERA leader, right-hander Blake Hassebrock (1-0, 0.64) starts for the Bees.
