South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - It will be a very happy Mother's Day for the moms of the South Bend Silver Hawks, as their sons gave them the best gift of all - a win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon was the team's third straight, the longest winning streak of the season that has moved the Hawks ahead of the TinCaps in the Eastern Division standings.
The Silver Hawks received a strong pitching performance from lefty Patrick Schuster (WP, 1-2), who allowed just two runs over 7.0 innings for his first win of the season. Schuster tied his career high with seven strikeouts while walking just one batter on the afternoon.
The offense gave Schuster some early run support, scoring three times in the first two innings. Ender Inciarte led off the first with a walk against Matt Branham (LP, 2-3) and then advanced on a wild pitch. After a single by Zach Walters put runners at the corners, the Silver Hawks pulled off a double steal with Inciarte swiping home when the throw went to second base. One out later, Yazy Arbelo drove in his team-best 22nd run of the season with a double to left to put the Silver Hawks ahead 2-0.
Inciarte scored again in the second inning, hitting a two out double to extend his hitting streak to five games. Walters then popped up to short, but B.J. Guinn dropped the ball with the error allowing Inciarte to score for the second time to give the Hawks the 3-0 advantage.
Fort Wayne made it interesting in the sixth, scoring twice on three hits and an error. Chris Tremblay picked up an RBI on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild throw from Matt Helm that allowed two runs to score on the play. Schuster settled down to get the final two outs in the inning and retired the side in order in the seventh to close out his strong outing.
South Bend put the game away in the seventh, scoring three runs on four walks issued by Chase Marona (ND). Raywilly Gomez had a RBI single to score Inciarte and Bobby Stone added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Inciarte scored three times in the game, and is now batting .467 for the Silver Hawks. He has a .543 on base percentage and has scored eight times in his eight games with South Bend.
The Silver Hawks and TinCaps wrap up the three game series on Monday evening at 6:30 PM Eastern Time on a Block Party Monday presented by your neighborhood Applebee's and WAOR.
