Kernels pound Snappers, 9-2

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Kernels pounded out 13 hits in a 9-2 thumping of Beloit on Sunday at Perfect Game Field. Max Russell (3-2) went seven innings for the second straight start in the win. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking two. Erik Gregersen went two innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked none.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Beloit starter Logan Darnell began the inning by walking Kernels first baseman Brandon Decker. With two outs, Ricky Alvarez singled to send Decker to third. Decker then scored on an infield single by Dan Eichelberger to give the Kernels a 1-0 lead.

The Kernels extended the lead with three runs in the 4th inning. Decker again led off the inning with a walk. Three straight hits with two outs brought home three runs. Alvarez singled to put runners at the corners. Eichelberger then doubled to left center to bring home Decker and Alvarez, giving the Kernels a 3-0 lead. Jesus Campos then followed with a single to score Eichelberger and make the score 4-0.

Beloit left fielder Gunner Glad led off the 5th inning with a solo home run to left field off of Kernels starter Max Russell to cut the Kernels lead to 4-1. The Kernels answered with a single run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Beloit's Logan Darnell walked Wes Hatton and David Harris to begin the inning. Hatton would later score on a throwing error by Snappers shortstop Daniel Santana to make the score 5-1.

Logan Darnel (2-2) took the loss in 4.2 innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits. He struck out three and walked four. The Kernels added two in the 6th inning against Beloit reliever Blayne Weller. Eichelberger led off the inning with a double. Campos then singled to bring home Eichelberger and give the Kernels a 6-1 lead. Campos later scored on a throwing error by Beloit third baseman Andy Leer to make the score 7-1. Weller went 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. He struck out two and walked one.

The Kernels continued with two more runs in the 7th inning. Four straight Kernels reached base against Snapper reliever Michael Tonkin. Alvarez doubled with one out. Eichelberger followed with a walk, and then Campos singled. With the bases loaded, Travis Witherspoon doubled home Alvarez and Eichelberger to give the Kernels a 9-1 lead. Tonkin went one inning in relief for Beloit. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one.

Erik Gregersen finished the ballgame on the mound for the Kernels. He went two innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked none. The lone run against Gregersen came in the 8th inning. Gregersen plunked Snapper left fielder Nate Roberts with a pitch to put him on first base. Roberts reached second base on defensive indifference. He then came home on a RBI single by Derek McCallum to make the score 9-2. Eichelberger led the Kernels offensively by going 3-4 with three RBI. Campos was 3-4 with two RBI. Alvarez went 3-5 on the day, and Witherspoon went 1-5 with two RBI.

The Kernels conclude their series with Beloit and the six game home stand on Monday with a noon game presented by Z 102.9. Fans can enjoy a Noon Lunch Combo Special, consisting of a regular sandwich, chips or popcorn, and soda or beer for just $7.00. The Kernels welcome students from St. Ludamila's to the park for their school day. Take the afternoon off of work and catch the Kernels and Snappers. Gates open at 11 a.m. and first pitch is set for 12:05 p.m.
