LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (19-11) put up seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to knock out the Lake County Captains (15-16) early on Mother's Day, winning 9-6 and taking the first two games of the series.

Lugnuts relievers stepped in to allow two runs in six innings of work with Alex Pepe (2-1) picking up the win. Starter Egan Smith was taken out after completing the third inning in which he was hit by a line drive.

The seven-run Lugnuts second inning came off of Captains starter Mike Goodnight (2-3) who allowed seven runs (three earned) on four base hits, three errors, a walk, and a hit by pitch in the inning alone. Goodnight only lasted 1 2/3 innings.

The Captains tried to rally back in the third inning when Smith gave up three, two-out hits including a two-RBI single by Anthony Gallas.

Captains right fielder Carlos Moncrief did all he could by connecting on two separate RBI-singles in the top of the fourth and top of the eighth innings.

Michael Crouse added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning when he hit his team leading fifth home run of the season off of Clayton Ehlert to drive in two more runs.

The Lugnuts go for the series sweep Monday night against the Lake County Captains at 7:05 PM at Cooley Law School Stadium. Lansing will throw righty Daniel Webb (3-1, 5.76) and Mike Rayl (3-0, 2.08) will get the bump for Lake County.
