Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The TinCaps fell into an early 3-0 hole and battled back before losing, 6-2, to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Sunday at Coveleski Stadium. RHP Chris Franklin delivered 1.1 scoreless innings for Fort Wayne, extending his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings.
South Bend jumped ahead in the first inning. Ender Inciarte drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Zach Walters then hit a ground ball and appeared to be out at first, but the first baseman's foot was not on the bag. The Silver Hawks plated Inciarte on a double-steal, then Yazy Arbelo slapped an RBI double into the left-field corner to make it 2-0.
In the second, Inciarte smacked a two-out double to right-center. Walters hit a pop-up to shallow left which was dropped by the shortstop to bring home an unearned run.
Fort Wayne scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth. Jose Dore and Emmanuel Quiles led off with back-to-back singles; both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by B.J. Guinn. Chris Tremblay then drove in a run with an infield single and when the throw to first went wild, Quiles raced home to make it 3-2.
The Silver Hawks blew it back open in the bottom of the seventh. Three straight walks to open the inning loaded the bases, then Raywilly Gomez scorched a ground ball off the pitcher's leg. He chased it down but fired wildly to the plate and two runs scored to make it 5-2. After an intentional walk, Bobby Stone lifted a sacrifice fly to center to stretch the margin to 6-2.
South Bend RHP Patrick Schuster (1-2) fired seven strong innings to pick up the win; Fort Wayne RHP Matt Branham (2-3) absorbed the loss.
Fort Wayne dipped to 12-19; South Bend upped its record to 12-17.
The TinCaps and Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) finish the three-game series Monday at 6:30 p.m. Fort Wayne RHP Adys Portillo (0-4) draws the start against South Bend RHP Bradin Hagens (1-1).
