Dayton Dragons News Release
Comstock Park, Mich.-West Michigan starting pitcher Kyle Ryan tossed six and two-thirds scoreless innings and the Whitecaps jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on the way to an 8-0 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon. The Whitecaps earned their fourth straight victory as they handed the Dragons their seventh loss in the last eight games.
West Michigan right fielder Ryan Hamme, in his first game in the Detroit Tigers organization after being released by the White Sox last week, went 4 for 4 to lead a 16-hit attack. The Whitecaps established a season-high for a Dragons opponent for hits in a game.
The Dragons finished with eight hits. Dominic D'Anna and Juan Duran each had a double and a single. D'Anna raised his batting average to .300 on the year. Duran extended his hitting streak to six straight games. The Dragons were 0 for 13 as a team with men on base.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Renken (1-4) suffered the loss. He worked six innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs (three earned) with no walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Jason Braun worked the seventh inning and allowed three runs, all coming on a home run by James Robbins.
West Michigan took advantage of two Dragons errors in the outfield to jump out to the early lead with four runs in the first. The Whitecaps collected five hits in the inning, aided by a throwing error by Dayton right fielder Jefry Sierra that allowed one run to score and a dropped fly ball by center fielder Yorman Rodriguez that paved the way for two more runs.
The game marked the third time this season that Dayton has been shutout. Dragons pitchers have also posted three shutout wins.
Dayton (15-16) plays at West Michigan (12-17) on Monday at 6:35 p.m. in the finale of the three-game series as the Dragons try to avoid a sweep. Josh Smith (2-2, 1.59) will start for the Dragons. The next home game is Tuesday, May 10 vs. the Lake County Captains at Fifth Third Field.
