Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Julio Morban and Stefen Romero each connected on home runs during a three-run first inning and Kalian Sams added a solo home run in the fifth as the Clinton LumberKings defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-3 on Wednesday evening at Alliant Energy Field. Left-hander Nate Reed yielded a run over 5.0 innings to pick up his third win of the year.
Morban, activated from the disabled list just two days earlier, ripped the first pitch he saw from right-hander Maverick Lasker into the Lumber Lounge in right for his second home run, giving the LumberKings a 1-0 advantage. Kevin Rivers then walked and Romero dropped the hammer on a two-run shot to the berm in left, raising the lead to 3-0 with his 12th home run.
Mike McGee opened the third with a double off the wall in right-center and scored as Rivers doubled into the right-field corner. Despite loading the bases on two walks after that, the Kings scored just the one run and held a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Lasker (L, 1-4) exited with four runs on five hits, two of them home runs, over 3.0 innings. Right-hander Stosh Wawrzasek came on for Wisconsin and allowed Sams' clout to left-center in the fifth inning but nothing more over 3.0 innings.
Reed (W, 3-3) kept the Timber Rattlers off the board over the first four innings but allowed a run in the fifth as Joey Paciorek doubled and scored on a two-out infield single by Nick Shaw. Reed walked three and struck out two, scattering four hits over his 5.0 innings.
Right-hander Jessie Nava issued a two-out walk to Chad Stang in the sixth and saw him score as Paciorek lined a single to right and Sams threw wildly to third base from right-field. Nava gave up just the unearned run over 3.0 innings.
Left-hander Jon Hesketh (S, 1) issued a leadoff walk to Paciorek in the ninth and allowed him to score on a sacrifice fly from Greg Hopkins to cut the lead to 5-3, but then secured his first professional save as he struck out T.J. Mittlelstaedt swinging to end the game.
Romero finished 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead the LumberKings, who now trail first-place Kane County (18-13) by 2.0 games. Paciorek went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the Timber Rattlers.
The LumberKings (16-15) and Timber Rattlers (13-18) continue the series tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Right-hander George Mieses (4-10, 5.00) starts for Clinton against Wisconsin right-hander Jimmy Nelson (5-7, 4.19). Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
