Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - After going 4-2 on their six-game road trip and enjoying an off day Tuesday, the Kane County Cougars returned to action Wednesday night but fell, 6-3, in the start of a three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars never led in the contest and now are 22-29 at home this season. Their lead over Clinton for the top playoff spot in the Western Division is two games with 39 contests left.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Cheslor Cuthbert tied the game with a two-out RBI single, which moved his hitting streak to nine games. The Cougars stranded two that inning, left two in the third and stranded the bases loaded in the fifth while going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position on the night.
The 1-1 score remained until the seventh when the Kernels scored four against Mitch Hodge (2-1), who took the loss. The Cougars fought back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh, including an RBI triple from Brian Fletcher, but the Kernels answered in the eighth with a run off Cole White and held on, 6-3. Starter Yordano Ventura, making his first start since July 9, gave up one run on three hits in 3 1/3 innings, Antonio Cruz tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Chas Byrne worked a 1-2-3 ninth out of the bullpen. Manny Correa (1-1) notched the win for Cedar Rapids, and Tyler Kehrer logged a two-inning save.
