Eastlake, OH - Luke Bailey's two-run double in the seventh inning broke up a potential shutout by the Lake County Captains on Wednesday night. He added a solo home run in the ninth, but there wasn't much else to talk about for Bowling Green (15-16, 56-45) in a 9-4 series opening loss to the Captains (13-18, 41-59). The victory ends the Hot Rods five-game winning streak against Lake County and leaves them with a 2-8 record in their last ten road games.

A game that started as a pitcher's duel took a turn for the worse in the bottom of the third. The Captains sent eight men to the plate, scoring four times against Jason McEachern. The highlight of the frame came on back-to-back two-out runs-scoring hits from Alex Monsalve and Jesus Aguilar to push the lead to 4-0.

The Captains tacked on another pair against McEachern in the fifth. An RBI triple from Carlos Moncrief pushed the lead to 5-0. Two batters later Monsalve delivered again with another single for the 6-0 advantage. McEachern made it through the rest of the inning, but allowed career-highs in hits (ten) and runs (six) to take the loss in his first start in a Hot Rods 2011 uniform.

Omar Bencomo pitched the sixth inning in relief, giving up the final three runs for Lake County. Ronny Rodriguez started the damage with a home run before Jordan Cassas answered with a two-out two-run single to push the margin to 9-0.

At that point, it was time for the Hot Rods abbreviated rally. Starter Kirk Wetmore left the game after six hitless innings, giving way to Joey Mahalic for the seventh. Mahalic immediately surrendered two base hits to Phil Wunderlich and Robby Price. A walk to Nick Schwaner loaded the bases for Bailey, who roped his two-run double down the left field line to break up the shutout at 9-2. Kevin Kiermaier added another run on an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 9-3.

The Hot Rods missed a golden opportunity in the eighth inning, stranding the bases loaded with one out. An inning later, Bailey capped off the night with a lead-off home run, his seventh of the season.

Bowling Green now turns to right-hander Eliazer Suero (6-4, 4.64) for the middle game of the series on Thursday night at 6 PM CDT. He'll be opposed by Lake County LHP Mike Rayl (5-5, 2.83). You can follow broadcast with Tom Gauthier on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com beginning at 5:35 PM CDT.
