Dayton, Ohio-The Fort Wayne TinCaps built a 5-0 lead and held off a Dayton comeback bid as they defeated the Dragons 5-4 on Wednesday night, snapping the Dragons eight-game winning streak before a crowd of 7,964 at Fifth Third Field. The loss left the Dragons with a second half record of 22-9. They are in first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division, one and one-half games ahead of Lansing.

The TinCaps got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the first inning and then added two more in the third and one in the top of the fifth to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Left fielder Luis Domoromo had two RBI singles and a run-scoring ground out to help the TinCaps to the five-run lead.

The Dragons started back in the bottom of the fifth when Juan Duran doubled, went to third on a ground out, and scored on Billy Hamilton's infield single to make it 5-1.

In the sixth, the Dragons scored three more runs to pull to within one. Ronald Torreyes walked to start the inning and with two outs, Donald Lutz also walked. Tucker Barnhart then lined a double to left field to drive in Torreyes, and Juan Duran followed with a double to deep center to drive in Lutz and Barnhart and make it 5-4. But Jefry Sierra struck out to end the threat with the tying run at second.

In the eighth, David Vidal walked with one out and advanced to second on a ground out, but Barnhart struck out to end the threat. Dayton was retired in order in the ninth by Fort Wayne reliever Kevin Quackenbush as the Dragons lost for the first time since July 16.

Dragons starting pitcher Josh Smith (9-5) worked the first five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs with one walk and six strikeouts to take the loss.

The Dragons collected eight hits. Torreyes, Hamilton, and Duran each had two. Torreyes raised his batting average to .412. Donald Lutz went 0 for 3 with a walk as his hitting streak was snapped at 16 games.

The Dragons are 22-9 in the second half and 57-44 on the season. The Dragons are 18-6 in the month of July (10-2 at home).

Dayton hosts the TinCaps on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the second game of the three-game series. Daniel Renken (5-8, 3.34) will start for Dayton. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Channels 23 and 372). Former Reds infielder and Dragons manager Todd Benzinger will provide color commentary.
