Chiefs Score Early, Lose 6-2 to River Bandits

Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs in the top of the first but ultimately fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 6-2 Wednesday night in the opener of a three-game series. The loss drops the Chiefs to 10-21 on the second half and 43-58 overall.

Peoria jumped out to an early lead against Illinois State University product Ryan Copeland who was making his fifth start of the season for Quad Cities. Taiwan Easterling led off the game with a single up the middle and Arismendy Alcantara gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a double to the wall in left. After a strikeout by Rubi Silva, Richard Jones gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to deep left-center.

The lead was short-lived for the Chiefs as Quad Cities came out swinging against Starling Peralta in the bottom of the first. With one down Michael Swinson drew a walk and Oscar Tavares singled. With Swinson on the move, Victor Sanchez doubled down the left-field line and both runners scored to tie the game 2-2. Sanchez moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Cody Stanley as the Bandits took a 3-2 lead.

Quad Cities extended their lead in the second. Ronny Gil drew a one-out walk and stole second before first-round pick Kolten Wong singled to right. Anthony Giansanti's throw home was in time to nail Gil for the second out of the inning as Wong moved to second. Swinson gave the Bandits a 4-2 lead with a single to right-center before Peralta struck out Tavares to end the inning.

With Copeland in cruise control against the Chiefs offense, Quad Cities tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning against Robinson Lopez. Tavares led off with a double and moved to third on a one-out single off the bat of Stanley. A throwing error by Dustin Geiger at third base allowed Tavares to score and Stanley moved to third. A sacrifice fly by Chris Edmondson made it 6-2 before Lopez got out of the inning.

Peralta (1-3) allowed four runs on five hits and five walks over four innings of work. He struck out one and took his second loss of the roadtrip. Lopez allowed two unearned runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings. Newcomer Roderik Pichardo allowed a double and a walk while striking out one in 1 1/3 shutout innings.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Taiwan Easterling (CF) - Easterling started the game with a single and scored in the top of the first. He added a single in the eighth inning to finish 2-for-4 on the night.

Notes: The Chiefs last scored in the first inning on Sunday, July 17 against Fort Wayne...Geiger and Easterling combined for four of the Chiefs six hits...The Chiefs were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position...Jones leads the team and is 4th in the MWL with 68 RBI...Peoria has played six straight games without scoring more than three runs...Giansanti threw out Gil trying to score in the second inning and now has 18 outfield assists to lead the Midwest League...The last Chiefs outfielder with more than 18 outfield assists was Tim Lemon with 19 in 2001...Wong, the Cardinals first round pick last month, was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored in his first start against the Chiefs...Peralta's five walks were a career high and he had never allowed more than two walks in an outings...Peralta has allowed 13 runs on 14 hits in his two starts on this road trip with all the runs scoring in the first two innings of those two outings...The Chiefs are 2-5 in Davenport this season and 3-7 overall against the Bandits...Peoria is 10-17 in the state of Iowa this season and 5-12 in the first game of a road series...The three-game series continues Thursday at 7:00 p.m. as the Chiefs send LH Eric Jokisch (7-3, 3.28) to the hill against Rock Falls native RH Seth Blair (5-3, 5.05)...
