Cowgill Latest to Join MLB Ranks

(PHOENIX) - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have reinstated right-handed pitcher J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list and selected the contract of outfielder Collin Cowgill from Triple-A Reno and in a corresponding move placed infielder Geoff Blum on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right pinkie finger (retroactive to July 25), according to D-backs' Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.

Putz, 34, was placed on the disabled list on July 1 (retroactive to June 29) with right elbow tendinitis and missed 19 games. In 4 rehabilitation appearances with the AZL D-backs and Reno, he allowed 2 hits with 3 strikeouts over 4.0 scoreless innings. Prior to his stint on the disabled list, he posted a 1-2 record with 21 saves and a 3.12 ERA (12 ER in 34.2 IP) with 9 walks and 33 strikeouts in 34 games with the D-backs. He had a franchise-record 16 consecutive saves from April 1-May 29 and was named MLB Delivery Man of the Month for May after converting all 11 save opportunities and allowing 1 unearned run in 13.0 innings.

Cowgill, 25, hit .354 (140-for-395) with 95 runs, 24 doubles, 8 triples, 13 home runs and 70 RBI in 98 games with the Aces. He hit for the second cycle in Reno history on June 7 vs. Salt Lake, had an Aces franchise-record 17-game hitting streak (.514, 38-for-74) from May 23-June 9 and was named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for April 25-May 1 and June 6-12. Over parts of 4 seasons in the D-backs organization, he hit .299 (418-for-1397) with 83 doubles, 21 triples, 47 home runs and 234 RBI in 360 games. Cowgill was selected by the D-backs in the fifth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. He will wear No. 4 for his first stint in the Major Leagues.

Blum, 38, hit .200 (3-for-15) with a double, home run and 2 RBI in 7 games with the D-backs. He missed 92 games while on the disabled list from March 30 (retroactive to March 22)-July 15 with inflammation of the right knee. It marks the first time in his career he has had two stints on the disabled list in the same season.

The D-backs 25-man roster is at its full complement while the 40-man roster is at 40 players.
