Indianapolis Indians News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Nick Kingham worked six strong innings to propel the Indianapolis Indians to a 4-2, seven-inning victory over the Syracuse Chiefs Tuesday evening at NBT Bank Stadium. The game was originally slated to be part of a doubleheader, but game two was postponed due to snow.

Kingham (W, 2-0) shook off a rough second inning to record his third consecutive impressive outing in 2018. He fanned five batters and issued just one walk. Both runs and four of the five hits he allowed came in the second frame. Johnny Hellweg (S, 3) closed the decisive seventh inning for his third save.

Indianapolis (5-4) got off to a quick start and scored a pair in the top of the first. Kevin Newman and Kevin Kramer opened the game with singles before Austin Meadows doubled home Newman. Kramer later crossed the plate on a passed ball by Syracuse (6-4) catcher Spencer Kieboom.

The Chiefs briefly leveled the score with their spurt in the second. Kieboom doubled home Alejandro De Aza for Syracuse's first run. Starting pitcher Cesar Vargas then singled home Kieboom with two outs to knot the game, 2-2.

The tie was brief as the Tribe went back in front in the third. Meadows worked a two-out walk, and Jose Osuna doubled into the right-center field gap to drive him home from first base.

An insurance run was pushed across by Indy in the sixth. Jordan Luplow tripled to right field and then touched home when Jacob Stallings singled through a drawn-in infield to complete the scoring.

Vargas (L, 0-1) was handed the loss for the Chiefs. He conceded three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings pitched.

Indianapolis concludes its opening road trip of the 2018 season Wednesday morning. Game 1 of the doubleheader is scheduled for 10:30 am., and Game 2 will follow approximately 30 minutes after its conclusion. Right-hander Tyler Eppler (1-0, 0.00) is slated to start for the Tribe.
