From the Notes
LAST FRIDAY: The Indians were clubbed on Friday night in Buffalo by an 11-1 margin, already their second defeat by 10 runs this season. Last year, Indy's worst loss was a nine-run margin on Aug. 3 at Columbus (10-1). The game on Friday remained scoreless until the home team plated one run in the third against Tribe starter Alex McRae. The wheels came off in the fourth as Jason Leblebijian and Roemon Fields both hit two-run homers to make it a 5-0 ballgame. Indy's lone run came in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Todd Cunningham, but Buffalo tacked on a pair of three-run frames in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to run away as victors.
SEVEN STRAIGHT FOR OSUNA: Tribe 3B/OF Jose Osuna is riding a seven-game hitting streak to start the season, batting .333 (8-for-24) with three doubles, one home run and four RBI during the stretch. He has also walked five times against just four strikeouts. He is one of seven players in the International League with a seven-plus game hitting streak already this season.
MAX TO THE BIGS: Max Moroff was recalled by Pittsburgh yesterday in a move to replace second baseman Josh Harrison, who was placed on the disabled list and is expected to miss six weeks after fracturing the 5th metacarpal on his left hand. Moroff was batting .280 (7-for-25) with two doubles, one triple, five RBI and six walks in seven games for the Tribe.
FIT FOR A KING(HAM): Nick Kingham was named International League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, the first weekly honor of his nine-year career. Kingham, 26, was tabbed as Indy's Opening Day starter and delivered a dominant outing against Columbus while earning no decision. The Pirates' No. 8 prospect, according to Baseball America, froze Clippers batters in winter-like conditions, recording the second 10-plus strikeout game of his career over five shutout innings. Kingham then capped the Tribe's first homestand on April 11 with six punchouts over six innings of one-run ball against Toledo in a 4-1 victory. Entering play tonight, Kingham's 16 strikeouts are tied for second most in the Inter-national League. His .114 batting average against (4-for-35) is second lowest among IL starting pitchers and fourth overall in the league.
EXPAND THE TROPHY CASE: While no actual trophy is given as part of the IL Weekly Awards, Indianapolis is no stranger to having its players take home weekly honors. The Tribe paced the IL a year ago in weekly honors, bringing home six as a team. Steven Brault (twice) and Tyler Glasnow each earned Pitcher of the Week honors, while Jason Rogers, Joey Terdoslavich and Erich Weiss each took home the Player of the Week award.
REMEMBER WHEN: Nick Kingham faced Syracuse for the first time in his career on Aug. 10, 2017 at Victory Field, and the righty dominated the Chiefs with the first complete game of his career (9.0ip, 2h, 1r/er, 0bb, 8k). He tossed 60 of his 85 pitches for strikes, with his only blemish being a solo homer surrendered to Brandon Snyder with one away in the top of the seventh. The 85-pitch complete game marked the lowest pitch count for a nine-inning complete game since Victory Field opened in 1996.
