Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Ronald Acuna Jr. smashed his first home run of the season Tuesday night to propel the Gwinnett Stripers to an 8-3 win over the Scranton-Wilkes Barre RailRiders.
The Stripers broke out for season highs in hits with 16 and runs with eight as eight of nine Gwinnett batters had at least one hit in the contest.
Acuna Jr. got Gwinnett's scoring going in the fifth inning with his two-run blast off Scranton starter Josh Rogers (L, 1-1), sending it an estimated 395 feet to straight away left field. He finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs and a walk.
The bulk of Gwinnett's scoring occurred in the following inning when the Stripers were able to bat around against Scranton's relievers. Sean Kazmar Jr. led off the sixth with a triple - the 10th of his Gwinnett career - and was brought home on a booming double by Rio Ruiz. Jaff Decker singled to make it first and third with no outs. Danny Santana then doubled in Ruiz, and Chris Stewart followed with a two-run double to make it 6-3.
Johan Camargo, continuing a rehab assignment for the Atlanta Braves, added two insurance runs with a double in the eighth inning.
Stewart finished the night 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the charge.
Starter Mike Soroka made it through five innings in his second home start for the Stripers. He worked himself out of a jam in the first inning, but surrendered three runs in the third, giving up four hits including an RBI single by Mike Ford and two-run double by Billy Fleming. Soroka's final line was 5.0 innings, six hits, three earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.
The combination of Evan Phillips (W, 1-1), Josh Ravin and Philip Pfeifer shut down the RailRiders the rest of the way. Ravin, also on a rehab assignment for Atlanta, went 2.0 hitless, scoreless innings and struck out four.
Gwinnett (4-6) will try for the three-game sweep Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. Left-hander Max Fried (0-0, 1.59 ERA) starts for the Stripers, while the RailRiders (7-5) will counter with right-hander David Hale (0-0, 2.53 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 The Other Side of the River beginning at 11:35 a.m.
