Bullpen Stars in 4-3 Win over Columbus
April 17, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Roenis Elias and Brandon Workman proved unhittable out of the Pawtucket Red Sox bullpen, as the two relievers combined to slam the door shut on the Columbus Clippers in a 4-3 PawSox win Tuesday night at Huntington Park.
The PawSox (5-5) broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning, and the bullpen stifled Columbus (4-7) the rest of the way - retiring 14 straight Clippers from the fourth through ninth innings - to claim their second win in as many nights to begin the three-game series. Elias (W, 1-0) got the final out in the fourth, then cruised through the fifth and sixth frames with three strikeouts. Workman took over in the seventh, got a groundout to first and proceeded to strike out the next five men he faced. In the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, Elias and Workman combined to punch out seven of the nine men they faced. Left-hander Williams Jerez (S, 2) stranded two in a scoreless ninth inning.
PawSox starter Chandler Shepherd, in his second start after making the offseason transition from a relief role, worked 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Pawtucket first baseman Sam Travis (2-for-3, BB, HBP) reached base four times and notched his fourth consecutive two-hit game. After he piled up four extra-base hits in four plate appearances Monday, third baseman Mike Olt doubled in the second inning Tuesday, running his streak of plate appearances with an extra-base hit to five. Catcher Dan Butler (3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R) matched his hit total from his first six games of the season (3-for-19).
Columbus starter Shawn Morimando (L, 1-2) ceded four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in 4.1 innings.
Pawtucket struck first in the top of the second. After left fielder Ramon Flores worked a leadoff walk, Olt tagged a double to right-center field. Butler then supplied a two-run, wall-ball double to left-center to stake Pawtucket to an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, center fielder Rusney Castillo ripped an RBI single on the ground to left field with two outs to make it 3-0.
Columbus grabbed a run back in the home half of the second on an RBI groundout from right fielder Richie Shaffer. From there, the Clippers strung together three consecutive singles to trim Pawtucket's cushion to 3-2.
Columbus tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from shortstop Yu Chang.
The PawSox climbed back in front in the fourth inning, as Butler doubled again and scored on an RBI single from second baseman Chad De La Guerra.
The three-game series with Columbus concludes Wednesday at Huntington Park at 6:35 p.m. PawSox right-hander Justin Haley (0-1, 4.70 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Clippers righty Adam Plutko (1-1, 3.70). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 6:05 p.m.
Following that three-game series in Columbus, the PawSox return home for a seven-game homestand April 20-25 (Friday-Wednesday) against the Gwinnett Stripers and Toledo. Good seats are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
