Syracuse, NY ( April 17, 2018 ) - The Syracuse Chiefs lost the opening game of a three-game series against the Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday afternoon, 4-2. Chiefs starting pitcher César Vargas picked up a hit and an RBI in the game while throwing five innings.

Indianapolis (5-4) struck first in the top of the first inning. Kevin Newman and Kevin Kramer both singled, putting runners on first and third base with no outs. Austin Meadows followed with a double, scoring Newman and moving Kramer to third base as the Indians took a 1-0 lead. With Jose Osuna batting, a passed ball allowed Kramer to score from third to give Indianapolis a 2-0 advantage.

Syracuse (6-4) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning off of Indianapolis right-hander Nick Kingham. With one out, Alejandro De Aza doubled. Spencer Kieboom followed with a double, scoring De Aza to trim the Indians' lead to one, 2-1. A Michael Almanzar groundout moved Kieboom to third base. Kieboom scored when Vargas singled to right field to knot the game up, 2-2.

The Indians took regained the lead in the third. With two outs, Meadows worked a walk. Osuna then doubled into the right-center-field gap, scoring Meadows from first for a 3-2 Indians edge.

After a 20-minute snow delay, Indianapolis added an insurance run in the sixth. With one out, Jordan Luplow tripled. Jacob Stallings followed with a single to score Luplow and extend the Indians' lead to two, 4-2.

The Chiefs and Indians conclude their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon with a scheduled doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 10:35 a.m.
