Kingfish Swim North for Game Two; Bullfrogs Present Harrison
June 22, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- After yesterday's offense-ridden, lead-trading, slugfest the Bullfrogs (13-11) seek a more reliable game from ace, Garrett Harrison (LHP/St. Cloud State). Tonight's contest against the Kenosha Kingfish (19-8), 7:05PM first pitch, unveils another chance for the Bullfrogs to make up a game in the South Division.
Bullfrogs Hop Over Fish In Game One
With the Kenosha leading by 4.5 games, Green Bay plays the second of a seven-game home stand that started off the right way Sunday afternoon with a 10-7 win.
Against Kenosha yesterday, the Bullfrogs had to come from behind to claim the lead three times. Green Bay's 10 runs came in six different innings and 12 hits emanated from eight different batters.
A thorough offensive output also forced the Kingfish to use six different pitchers. Starter, E.J. Trapino (LHP/Wright State) had only surrendered one run in 8 2/3IP before the Bullfrogs clobbered him for five runs on six hits in 3 1/3IP.
The Bullfrogs also got to other typically stingy hurlers including Ryan Orr (RHP/ Kalamazoo). Orr came into the outing with only one run charged to him over 16 IP, and gave up his second run of the year in just 2/3 of an inning against Green Bay.
Harrison Struts In With Lights Out Stuff
Putting together a season the way Garrett Harrison has is no small task. He comes into this one versus Kenosha claiming a 1-1/1.64ERA/27.1 IP/ 31K-6BB slash line. In three of four starts, he has lasted seven innings or more, and in every start he has six strikeouts or over.
Against Wausau last week, Harrison dialed up 11 strikeouts, tied for the most a pitcher has thrown in a start this season in the league. In the start, he was tossing his pitches in a particular way that seemed to vex and confuse batters every time.
He will pitch behind a Green Bay offense that is hitting .273 at Joannes Stadium with an impressive .374 OBP. Harrison is pitching at home for the first time since opening day against La Crosse on May 26th.
Robb Paller (Columbia) since coming to the Bullfrogs has started two games in left field, has two hits, and three runs. With the awaited return of Logan Taylor (Louisiville) to the outfield, the Bullfrogs have rounded out the outfield that started with just two true outfielders in May.
Another New York-area native, Ty Blankmeyer (IF/St. John's) has a three-game hit streak (5-for-8) including a Coaches' Player of the Game Award for his 3-for-3 day in which he had two hits to re-claim the lead both times for the Bullfrogs in Sunday's 10-7 win over Kenosha.
Kingfish Under Attack
Kenosha has lost three straight games including the middle loss that was a walk-off home run by Madison at the "Duck Pond." Another deflating Sunday loss leaves the Kingfish searching for a response, an improbable stretch of recent failures for a team that leads the league with 19 wins.
Duffy Dyer's club looks for a pick-me-up start from Dillon Mazzocolli (RHP/Texas State) who has been a long-reliever with just one start. Like Trapino, Mazzocolli is a bit of an unknown addition to the back end of the Kingfish rotation. He sports a 3.17 ERA with 17IP/18K-3BB.
Control has not been an issue for the Kenosha pitchers. They have issued only 84 walks, the third lowest total of 18 teams in the Northwoods League. And their 224 K's in 233 2/3IP is second overall.
As seen yesterday, the Kingfish rely on the long ball to stage big innings. They have 17 home runs, just three less than a Wausau club that plays in Athletic park with a 360' centerfield wall from home plate.
One of the scariest guys they have is Eric Filia (OF/UCLA). He's hit .316 with eight doubles and nine RBI this summer. Filia was an integral part of the UCLA National Championship team in 2013, going 4-for-6 with 7RBI in the final championship wins against Mississippi State.
Other boppers including Alex Borglin (Central Michigan) who has a .329/.412/.376 slash line. And Mitch Gasbarro (Eastern Illinois) went 3-for-3 with an RBI, coming in for an injured Nick Sergakis (Ohio State).
