Kingfish Show Resilience: Beat Growlers

Kenosha, Wis- The Kenosha Kingfish (14-11) defeated the Kalamazoo Growlers (8-15) 9-8 at Historic Simmons Field on Saturday, July 31st.

In the first game between these two teams in the second half, Kenosha struck first in the second off of a Xavier Watson (Illinois) RBI single to score Angelo Cantelo (Lewis University) to put Kenosha up 1-0.

Following a three run frame for Kalamazoo, Kenosha responded with three of their own on a Justin Janas (Illinois) 2-RBI single. The next batter, Chase Estep (Kentucky) singled to score Kirk Liebert (Kentucky) to put Kenosha back on top 4-3. However, in the fourth, TJ Williams (Notre Dame) tied the game on a solo shot.

In the fifth, Cantelo responded with a home run of his own on a two-run shot to left to give Kenosha a 6-4 lead. However, Kalamazoo responded with two in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a two run lead into the late stages.

In the last of the eighth with two outs, Kenosha got the offense going. With two on, Liebert singled to score McKay Barney (Washington) to cut the deficit down to 8-7. Following a Janas walk, Estep walked as well to tie the game. The next batter Wyatt Crenshaw (Colorado Christian) walked to give the Kingfish the lead. Kalamazoo failed to respond in the ninth as the Kingfish salvaged the opener.

On the mound, Kingfish starter Ethan Peters  (Loras) threw three innings conceding three runs. Harry Deliyannis (Pomona-Pitzer) came on in relief allowing three runs in three innings pitched.  Randon Dauman (Minnesota) threw the seventh, conceding two runs. Jared Thompson (Illinois-Springfield) threw a shutout in the eighth frame and took the win. Nick Meyer (Dayton) got the save with a shutout ninth.

Kenosha will take on Kalamazoo tomorrow, Sunday, August 1. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. CDT.
