Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys got one big inning against Pelicans starter Cole Rohrbough, and that's all they needed to seal a series victory over the Pelicans.
Wally Crancer homered and drove in two, and the Keys fended off a late Pelicans rally, earning a 5-4 victory over Myrtle Beach in the final game of a three-game set at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Pelicans kicked off the day's offense with an RBI single by Gerry Rodriguez in the top of the fourth, scoring Michael Fisher and giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Frederick responded in the bottom of the inning with a four-run outburst that started with the first four Keys reaching via a pair of doubles sandwiched around a walk and followed by a single. Tyler Henson, Crancer and David Cash all drove home a run, and a Rohrbough wild pitch brought another across to give Frederick a 4-1 lead after four.
Aside from that troublesome fourth, Rohrbough (4-6) avoided problems the rest of the day. In all, the left-hander threw six innings and allowed five runs-four earned-on eight hits, striking out four with two walks. Opposing starter Pedro Beato (5-5) didn't last as long, going just five and a third innings, but only allowed three runs on seven hits.
The Pelicans narrowed the gap against Beato in the sixth. Making his 2009 debut with Myrtle Beach, Ernesto Mejia laced an RBI double to left field scoring Fisher with one out, and Donell Linares scored when Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice against reliever Eddie Gamboa who closed the door after that. The Keys reclaimed a run in the bottom of the sixth when Crancer hit his fourth home run of the season off Rohrbough.
Myrtle Beach's attempt at a rally got started in the ninth with a leadoff double by Rodriguez, and Chad Lundahl singled with two outs to cut the deficit to one. Lundahl gave way to pinch-runner Robert Marcial who moved up to second on a Cole Miles single. But with the game-tying run in scoring position, Keys reliever Ryan Rodriguez (S, 2) induced a Fisher groundout to end it. The Pelicans outhit the Keys 12 to eight and had five players with multi-hit games but went 3-for-13 as a team with runners in scoring position, stranding seven.
The Pelicans open a four-game set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks tomorrow night before returning home for the series opener of three with the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday, July 18. The following night, Atlanta Braves right-hander Tim Hudson is scheduled to be on hand for a rehab start at BB&T Coastal Field. Tickets are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling the Pelicans at (843) 918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
