Winston-Salem Pounds Lynchburg Pitching for 13 Runs and 17 Hits

Winston-Salem overwhelmed Lynchburg 13-3 on Sunday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash avoided being swept in the series with the victory. The Hillcats will meet Potomac in the opener of a four-game series at Pfitzner Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Monday.

The Cats drew first blood with a run in the opening frame. Alex Presley ripped a one-out double off Dash starter Jacob Rasner. After Rasner walked Matt Hague with two outs in the inning, Kris Watts delivered an RBI single that scored Presley for a 1-0 Lynchburg lead.

Winston-Salem answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Salvador Sanchez hit a one-out single off Lynchburg starter Jeff Locke and promptly stole second base. Sanchez advanced to third on a groundout from John Curtis. Kyle Shelton knocked in Sanchez with a single to even the score at 1-1.

The Dash grabbed the lead with a four-run frame in the third. Tyler Kuhn singled to start the inning and advanced to second on Greg Paiml's bunt single. Kuhn and Paiml successfully executed a double steal, which put runners at second and third with no outs. Jimmy Gallagher drove in Kuhn with an RBI groundout, which enabled Paiml to take third.

Paiml scored on Brent Morel's sacrifice fly. Seth Loman drew a walk from Locke and Sanchez smacked a two-run home run to put the Dash ahead 5-1.

The Cats cut into the Winston-Salem lead with a run in the fifth. Jordy Mercer belted a one-out triple to left-center field and Hague followed with an RBI double to make it a 5-2 game.

Winston-Salem struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on Morel's two-run homer off Cats reliever Paul Mildren to push the lead to 7-2.

Chase d'Arnaud socked a solo home run in the top of the seventh to reduce the deficit to 7-3.

But the Dash added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh when Loman belted a two-run home run off Lynchburg reliever Ramon Aguero to make it a 9-3 contest.

Winston-Salem tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Loman's three-run homer off Chris Cullen to seal the 13-3 win.

Locke (2-7) took the loss for Lynchburg while Rasner (3-0) earned the victory for the Dash. The Cats were outhit 17-6 by Winston-Salem in the loss.

Lynchburg travels to Potomac for the opener of a four-game series at Pfitzner Stadium Monday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
