July 12, 2009 -- 2:00 p.m.
Grainger Stadium - Kinston, North Carolina
Game #84/Road #48
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals will wrap up their six-game road trip through the Carolinas by playing a matinee affair with the Kinston Indians from Historic Grainger Stadium with first pitch expected at 2:00 p.m. Last night, Potomac avoided losing their third consecutive road game for the first time all year by defeating the K-Tribe 8-4 in game two. The P-Nats are the first Carolina League squad to reach 30 road victories during the 2009 season. Kinston, meanwhile, is just 16-30 this year from their 60-year-old ballpark and have only won five home games since May 9th. A win in today's finale will give the K-Tribe just their first home series since May 8-10 against Myrtle Beach.
This series was the first meeting between these two clubs since May 27th when the Indians swept a rain-shortened two-game series with the Nationals from Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac won three one-run contests against Kinston from May 18th-21st and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Indians yesterday to even the season-set to 4-4. Each teams' pitching staff has been spectacular with the Indians (2.79 ERA) staff holding a slight lead over the Nationals (2.99 ERA) in terms of team ERA. Of the eight previous meetings between these clubs, five have been decided by one run.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Mike McGuire, 23, was drafted in the 43rd round by the Cleveland Indians in the 2008 June First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Delaware. The 6'7'' right-hander spent his professional debut with the Short-Season Mahoning Valley Scrappers where he went 3-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 21 relief appearances. He struck out 47 in his 40.0 innings of work and heald NYPL batters to just a .231 batting average. This year, McGuire began the campaign with the Low-A ballclub in Lake County and was 5-3 with a 3.18 ERA primarily coming out of the Captains' bullpen. He did start one South Atlantic League game and threw five shutout innings and yielded two hits and walked a pair vs. Kannapolis on May 11. In two games with the K-Tribe this year, McGuire has allowed 8 ER on 11 hits in 6.1 innings as a piggyback starter. Later in this afternoons' contest, McGuire will give way to RHP Bryce Stowell who is 0-4 with a 6.56 ERA in seven games (five starts) for Kinston.
