Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids offense explodes for 12 runs on ten hits as the Kernels take down Lansing 12-9 in game one of the series Tuesday night.

After being shutout, recording a season-low two hits on Sunday in Wisconsin, the Kernels' offense came out with a bang Tuesday night. Noah Miller led off the Cedar Rapids half of the first inning with a single, then after a walk and a fielder's choice, he scored on a wild pick-off attempt to put the Kernels on the board 1-0. The next batter Jorel Ortega then produced the Kernels' second run with an RBI double to make it a 2-0 lead after one.

A Colby Thomas solo home run cut the Kernels' lead down to 2-1 before Cedar Rapids came to bat in the bottom of the second. Two singles and two walks to begin the inning scored a run and loaded the bases with no one out. An Emmanuel Rodriguez RBI fielder's choice then produced another Kernels run, extending the lead to 4-1. Two batters later, Ben Ross made it 6-1, smashing a two-run triple off the wall in left field, and he came home to score on a Jorel Ortega two-run home run which made it 8-1 Cedar Rapids after two innings.

In the top of the third, the Lugnuts refused to quit. Jacob Wilson doubled to open the frame and later scored on a Joshwan Wright triple to cut to a six-run contest. After a pair of walks, Wright scored on a wild pitch, and two stayed on base for Euribiel Àngeles, who drove home one with a single and the second on a throwing error to chop the Kernels' lead down to 8-5.

Kernels got two of the runs back in the bottom of the third inning. A double and a walk put two on for Emmanuel Rodriguez, who lined a single into right that got behind the right fielder scoring both runners to put the Kernels in double figures and up 10-5.

That stayed the score until the top of the sixth inning. After a leadoff walk, Junior Perez smoked a two-run home run to make it 10-7, then back-to-back doubles by Danny Bautista Jr. and Brennan Milone cut to a 10-8 Cedar Rapids lead.

With the Kernels searching for breathing room, Miller came to the plate with two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two strikes, he ripped a single into right field to open the Cedar Rapids lead to 12-8.

Lansing got a run back in the eighth inning, but then Miguel Rodrguez came on and finished a four-out save, his league-best 13th save of the season, to secure the 12-9 victory.

The win for Cedar Rapids (59-38) is its fifth in seven attempts against Lansing (44-52). The Kernels look to take the first two games of the series with the Lugnuts Wednesday afternoon with Zebby Matthews on the mound at 12:05.
