Kernels Take Walk on the Wild Side

June 13, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Seven walks spelled disaster for the Kernels on Monday night as the Burlington Bees capitalized on the free passes to grab an 8-3 victory at Veterans Memorial Stadium in front of 1,436 fans.

The Bees put all but one of their runs on the board in the fourth inning when starter Joe Torres issued walks to the first five batters he faced, the fifth and final one plating a run. Relief pitcher Ronnie Ray came on with the bases loaded and eventually surrendered a three-run triple to Ed Lucas.

In their half of the fourth inning the Kernels also capitalized on a pair of walks, but not to the extreme that the Bees did. After Bees' starter Danny Christensen struck out the first two batters he faced the lefty issued walks to Brett Martinez and Jason Ramos. Alexi Casilla then slapped a liner to center to scored Martinez.

The Kernels added single runs in the seventh and ninth innings. A wild pitch scored Freddy Sandoval in the stretch frame and Aaron Peel brought in Ramos with a soft liner with two outs in the final inning.

Torres took the loss for the Kernels after tossing three innings and being touched for two hits and five runs. He walked six and uncorked a pair of wild pitches while failing to record a strike out.

Christensen picked up his first win in over two years with a five inning outing during which he held the Kernels to just four hits and one run. The Burlington southpaw struck out three and walked five. Burlington relievers Justin Sherman and Chad Blackwell each surrendered lone runs in relief appearances.

Casilla and Ramos paced the Kernels at the plate. Batting at the top of the order, Casilla was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Ramos was a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Both teams meet again tomorrow night for the second contest of a three-game series. The Kernels are scheduled to throw righty Jesse Smith against Burlington All-Star Luis Cota. Game time is 7 p.m. and gates open at 6 with a special Flag Day celebration preceding the game.
