Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL – The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that right-handed pitcher Clay Tichota, infielder Wes Long and outfielders Chalon Tietje and Chris Tritle have all been sent to the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, Northwest). As a result of the mass exodus, the Cougars have been left with two active spots on the roster, one of which will be filled by infielder Gregorio Petit for tonight's 7:00 p.m. game against the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field in Beloit, Wisconsin.

Injured fielding a popup in the fifth inning of the Cougars May 4 victory over the Dayton Dragons, Petit went on the disabled list with a fractured right middle finger on May 5. Prior to that time, the shortstop made 22 appearances for Kane County, batting .225 for the Cougars. Knocking out the team's first home run of the season, Petit slugged two additional home runs while driving in ten teammates. 2005 marks the Venezuelan's fourth season within the A's minor league system, working his way up the ranks since being singed by Oakland as a non-drafted free agent on July 17, 2001. In the last three years, Petit has played for the Dominican Summer League A's (Rookie, 2002), the Arizona A's (Rookie, 2003) and the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, 2004), slugging no less than .256, which he produced last season.

Landing on the disabled list just this past week on June 9, Clay Tichota appeared on the mound 18 times for Kane County, tossing 26.2 innings and collecting 23 strikeouts before right-shoulder tendonitis shut him down. A 2004 graduate from Regis University, the A's picked up Tichota in the 17th round of last year's June draft. Tichota launched his professional career last season with a 3-0 mark for the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, Northwest), tossing 36 strikeouts in 42.0 innings pitched.

Manning both second and third for the Cougars, Wes Long batted .193 for Kane County, collecting 6 RBI and one home run in 29 games. Selected by the A's in the 29th round of the 2004 June Draft, the 22-year-old began his professional career playing rookie ball with the Arizona A's. Long slugged an impressive .345 for the A's and led the rookie league with 17 doubles. Named a 2004 post-season All-Star for the Arizona Rookie League, Long also played a short stint with the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, Northwest).

In his third year with Kane County, outfielder Chris Tritle played in 34 games for the Cougars this season prior to being placed on the disabled list on May 30 with a left elbow inflammation. Batting .216 this season, Tritle knocked three out of the park while driving in eleven teammates. Chris started his professional career with the Arizona A's in 2000 after being signed by Oakland in the 19th round of that year's June draft.

Fellow outfielder Chalon Tietje hit .231 for the Cougars previous to today's move, producing 18 RBI with one home run and seven doubles. The former California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) student played in 41 games last season with Vancouver, garnering 34 hits while batting .262 with one home run and 17 RBI. The A's drafted Tietje in the 17th round last June.
