Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, IN– The opening game of the three game series between the Dayton Dragons (27-36) and the South Bend Silver Hawks (39-25) featured a combined 21 runs and 27 hits, six lead changes and three ties. The Silver Hawks sent the 5,442 who came out to Coveleski Stadium on Monday night home happy with a single run in the seventh to tie the game and a single run in the eighth to pull out an 11-10 decision over the Dragons

Dayton starter Philippe Valiquette (ND) had posted outstanding back-to-back outings, including one against South Bend, heading into his Monday start against the Silver Hawks. Valiquette lasted just 2.0 innings, getting roughed up for six runs and seven hits, both career highs. South Bend scored two in the first inning and four in the second off the Dayton starter.

Sliver Hawk starter Steven Jackson (ND) struggled pitching with a lead. South Bend led 2-0 after the first inning scoring on an Agustin Murillo RBI double and a Javier Brito sac fly. The Dragons tied the game in the second scoring three off Jackson, Bradley Key drove in two with a single and Cody Strait gave Dayton the 3-2 lead with a sac fly.

The Hawks pushed the lead to 6-3 with four off Valiquette in the bottom of the second. Murillo added two more RBI to his tally with his second double of the night. Jereme Milons and Carlos Gonzalez both added RBI singles and Valiquette and the Dragons looked to be in for a long evening.

Dayton battled back to tie the game at 6-6 and then take a 9-6 lead with three runs in both the third and fourth innings off Jackson. Jeremiah Piepkorn launched his seventh HR of the season, a two run shot in the third to pull Dayton within 6-5. Key added his third RBI of the night in the third to tie the game at 6-6. In the fourth the Dragons took a 7-6 lead on an RBI single from B.J.Szymanski. A RBI fielder's choice from Piepkorn made it 8-6 and a RBI double from Tonys Gutierrez put the Dragons up 9-6.

In the sixth, it was South Bend's turn to come back, this time against Dragons reliever Zac Stott (ND). Gonzalez picked up an RBI double to get the Hawks within 9-7. Javier Brito knocked home a run with his second sac fly of the night to close South Bend to within 9-8. Stott was lifted in favor of Carlos Bohorquez (LP, 0-3). On the second pitch of his night, Bohorquez threw wild to home past Dragons catcher John Purdom. The wild pitch scored Gonzalez from third and the game was tied at 9-9.

The teams traded single runs in the seventh, with the Dragons taking a short lived 10-9 lead on a strange set of plays. John Purdom singled and moved to third on a throwing error by Emilio Bonafacio. With Purdom at third, Evan Conley chopped a grounder to Murillo at third base. Purdom came home and buried Silver Hawk catcher Wilkin Castillo, knocking the ball free. South Bend got the equalizer off Bohorquez in the bottom of the inning on Murillo's fourth RBI of the night, a single to left.

The Hawks got the game winner in the bottom of the eighth inning off Bohorquez when Allen Mottram launched his 10th home run of the season into the lawn section in left center. The shot for Mottram was his fourth off the Dragons in eight games and proved to be the game winner as South Bend hung on 11-10.

The Dragons and Silver Hawks continue the three game series with game two Tuesday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM. Tuesday's first pitch is 8:00 PM, with RHP Homer Bailey getting the start for the Dragons. The Silver Hawks will send RHP Ross Ohlendorf to the mound.
