South Bend, IN â One of the reasons the South Bend Silver Hawks own the best record in the Midwest League is being able to overcome adversity during the games they play. In front of 5,442 fans, the South Bend Silver Hawks won by coming from behind for the nineteenth time this season, winning 11-10 Monday night at the Cove,
Over the first three innings, the teams combined to score a total of 12 runs. The Hawks scored two runs in the first and four in the second, while the Dragons countered with three runs in the second and another three in the third, including Jeremiah Piepkorn's sixth home run of the 2005 season.
Dayton (27-36) fired over another three in the fourth. With one out in the frame Phil Gentry reached on an infield single and Drew Anderson followed with a single to centerfield moving Gentry ahead ninety feet. B.J. Szymanksi, the fourth batter in the inning powered a singled to center to bring Gentry to the plate and moving Anderson to third. Jeremiah Piepkorn then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Anderson from third with Tonys Gutierrez driving in Piepkorn with an RBI double to center.
The Hawks scored three times in the sixth inning to tie the game at nine, but the Dragons were able to regain the lead at 10-9 scoring a run in the seventh.
The Hawks (39-25) tied the game in the seventh getting three consecutive one out hits from Emilio Bonifacio, Wilkin Castillo and Agustin Murillo. The Murillo base hit scored Bonifacio from second to knot the game at 10.
In the bottom of the eighth, with two out, Allen Mottram skied the first pitch thrown by Carlos Bohorquez (0-3) over the left field wall to give the Hawks an 11-10 advantage.
Matt Elliott closed the door in the ninth retiring the three batters he faced for save number 15 this season, preserving the win for Esmerling Vasquez (3-2).
The Silver Hawks continue their three game series with the Dayton Dragons Tuesday. The Silver Hawks will throw Ross Ohlendorf (4-4) against the Dragons Homer Bailey (1-3) Tuesday's are TCU Silver Hawks Kids Club games. All Kids Club members receive two free tickets when they show their membership card at the box office.
