Cougars Blast Snappers in Beloit

Beloit, WI – The Kane County Cougars blasted 16 hits to produce 11 runs Monday night in Beloit, beating the Snappers 11-4 at Pohlman Field. Kevin Melillo drove in two, Javier Herrera cranked a two-run homer and Tommy Everidge delivered a grand slam to lead the offense. Tony Evans made his first appearance with the Cougars and pitched 6 2/3 innings to record the win.

The Cougars began the scoring in the fourth against Beloit's starter Josh Hill. Everidge singled, and Gregorio Petit, making his return from the disabled list, roped a double. Melillo's double scored both men. After Melillo was caught stealing, Ryan Ruiz singled and Herrera blasted his two-run shot to the opposite field for a 4-0 advantage. The Snappers scored against Evans in the bottom half, but Everidge's grand slam in the sixth against Kyle Aselton broke the game open, 8-1. Evans allowed a two-run homer to Tarrence Patterson in the seventh, so he left after 6 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on eight hits, walked one and fanned four.

Melillo added a sacrifice fly in the eighth against John Williams while run-scoring knocks in the ninth by Jose Pineda and Nick Blasi made it 11-3. The Snappers scored against Jose Corchado in the bottom before Rob Semerano closed the game. Evans (1-0) got the win, and Hill (1-3) suffered the loss.Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 7 CDT. Jared Trout (2-1, 2.42) goes to the mound for the Cougars (27-36) against right-hander Kyle Waldrop (2-5, 4.70) for Beloit (30-34).
