Kernels slay Dragons in 9-0 romp

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Kernels (16-16) rode another terrific starting performance by Nick Adenhart to a 9-0 win over Dayton in front of 7,969 fans at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night.

Adenhart (5-0) struck out a season-high nine batters and held the Dragons to just four hits through seven innings as the Kernels picked up their first win in Dayton in over two years.

The No. 6 prospect in the Angels organization whittled his ERA to a miniscule 1.65 and left Dayton batters baffled most of the night. The Dragons failed to get a runner further than second base off Adenhart and reliever Chris Howell, who pitched two scoreless innings in a non-save situation.

Of course, Adenhart couldn't have picked up a victory had the offense not scored at lease one run. The Kernels bats did that and then some, crushing three home runs and tormenting a trio of Dragon hurlers.

Jordan Renz broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when he belted his fifth homer of the year on an offering from right-hander Jeff Stevens (1-2). Renz was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while raising his average to .292 on the year. He fell just a double shy of hitting for the first Kernels cycle since Howie Kendrick pulled off the feat in August of 2004.

Renz's self-produced run would hold up but the Kernels showed no signs of slowing down as two innings later they put a three-spot on the board thanks to a three-run clout off the bat of first baseman Mark Trumbo. The blast, Trumbo's fourth of the year, was served up by Russ Haltiwanger, who had just entered the game to spell Stevens.

Dayton pitcher Zac Stott plunked Dallas Morris to drive in a run in the seventh and Warner Madrigal smashed a Stott pitch over the wall in left in the eighth. But the icing on the cake for the Kernels came with a three-run finale in the ninth that capped an impressive 12-hit night which included six extra-base hits.

Brad Coon doubled and scored on a throwing error after Morris hit a grounder to second that Dayton's Michael DeJesus threw away. Renz then tripled to bring home Morris before scoring himself two batters later on a sacrifice fly by catcher Brett Martinez.
