South Bend, IN (May 9, 2006) - Michael Penn pitched six innings and earned his first professional win as the Burlington Bees (12-20) shutout the South Bend Silver Hawks (14-18) 2-0 at Coveleski Stadium tonight. With the win, the Bees even this series at a game apiece and have won three of their last four games.
Penn (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed six hits and two walks while striking out three. The Silver Hawks biggest threat to break the shutout was in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and Ricardo Sosa on first, Steve Mena lined a double down the right field line. Carlos Arroyo got over to cut the ball off in front of the Silver Hawks' bullpen and started a perfect relay through second baseman Josh Johnson to the plate in time to cut down Sosa trying to score. Sosa caught catcher Kiel Thibault with a forearm to the face on a collision to break up the play, but Thibault held onto the ball for the out. Chris Hayes worked an inning and a third in relief and struck out three of the four batters he faced. Gilbert De La Vara set down the final five batters in a row and earned his team-high third save.
The Bees got on the board in the top of the third inning. Ethien Santana led off with a single, moved to second on a bounce out, and scored on a single by Chris McConnell. Mario Lisson manufactured the second Bees' run by himself in the sixth inning. Lisson lined a two-out double down the right field line, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch by starter Anthony Cupps (1-3) for South Bend. Vince Bongiovanni pitched two scoreless innings and Enmanuel Duran pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game for South Bend.
The Bees and Silver Hawks continue this series tomorrow morning at 9:30AM Central time. The Bees will start RH David Henninger (1-2, 4.50) against RH Ramon Sanchez (0-6, 9.95) for the Silver Hawks. The game will be broadcast live on The Ticket 1360 AM KBKB with the pre-game show starting at 9:10.
