Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Cedar Rapids Kernels (16-16) turned the tables on the Dayton Dragons (16-16) Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field shutting out the home team 9-0 in front of 7,969 fans in the second game of a four game series. The Dragons, who launched four home runs in Monday's 10-4 win, watched the Kernels stroke three home runs to pick up the win and even the series at one game a side.

The ballgame began as a pitcher's duel through the first three innings with the Kernels Nick Adenhart (WP, 4-0) and the Dragons Jeff Stevens (LP, 1-2) mowing down the opposition. Adenhart shutout the Dragons through 7.0 innings of work, striking out a season high nine batters, walking one and allowing just four hits on the night. Only one Dragons batter advanced as far as third base against the Cedar Rapids starter who won his second straight start and fifth decision of the season.

With the score tied at 0-0 heading into the fourth, the Kernels got on the board on a solo homer from Jordan Renz. The blast from Renz to left center was his second of the series and gave Cedar Rapids the advantage at 1-0.

The lead jumped to 4-0 in the top of the sixth inning as the Kernels went yard for the second time on the night. Brad Coon led off the inning against Stevens with a triple to right. After a strikeout for the first out for the first out of the inning, Stevens hit Renz with a pitch to put runners on the corners. The Dragons went to the bullpen and brought in Russell Halitwanger (ND) to face Mark Trumbo. Trumbo took a Halitwanger offering over the wall in right for a three run shot to extend the lead to four.

Zac Stott (ND) took over for Halitwanger in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out. Stott hit Dallas Morris with a pitch to force in the fifth run of the game for the Kernels. Stott surrendered a solo HR to Warner Madrigal in the eighth and was touched for three more runs in the ninth, two of which were unearned due to a Dayton fielding miscue, to close out the scoring at 9-0.

Chris Howell (ND) blanked the Dragons over the final two innings on the night in a non-save situation to preserve the shutout.

The Dragons continue the four game series Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field against Cedar Rapids, with a 7:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM.
