Peoria Chiefs News Release
Ft. Wayne, IN - With one bad inning the Peoria Chiefs saw their five game win streak come to an end 6-0 at the hands of the Fort Wayne Wizards Tuesday night. With the loss the Chiefs are now 1-1 on the roadtrip and 18-14 on the season and still in first place in the Western Division.
Neither team could push home a run in the first five innings. Chiefs starter Tood Blackford, an Indiana native, allowed a lead off 6th inning single to Will Venable. After a passed ball and a wild pitch, Daryl Jones singled home Venable for the game's first run. Blackford got a strikeout but then issued a walk before Nick Hundley doubled home two and advanced to third on the throw home. Hundley came home on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead and Blackford then hit Chad Steiner with a pitch. Newcomer Jesus Lopez capped the inning and ended Blackford's night with a two-run homer to left for a Fort Wayne 6-0 lead.
Peoria threatened in the 1st, 2nd and 5th innings but left runners in scoring position each time. The Chiefs left 10 runners on base overall and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. A leadoff double was left on base in the 5th inning and in the 8th the Chiefs had first and third with no outs and couldn't capitalize.
Blackford (2-1), from nearby Tippecanoe, allowed six runs over 5 1/3 innings while walking three and striking out three. Matt Avery pitched the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Wizards starter Joel Santo (2-2) picked up the win with six shutout innings in which he allowed four hits and three walks.
