Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Peoria, IL - The Cedar Rapids Kernels were held to four hits and shut out by the Peoria Chiefs, 1-0, on Thursday night at O'Brien Field in Peoria. Anthony Giansanti scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch by Matt Oye.
The two teams were engaged in a pitcher's duel for nearly all the game. Kernels starter Ariel Pena allowed three hits, walked two and struck out eight over 6 IP and Peoria starter Frank Batista allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three, also over six innings.
The Kernels had a chance to tie the game in the top of the ninth as Jean Segura singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Long, and went to third on a wild pitch by Peoria reliever Corey Martin. Segura was thrown out at home on a contact play as Jeremy Cruz hit ground ball to shortstop Hak-Ju Lee who threw home to catcher Jose Guevara in time to tag out Segura.
