Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Right-hander Yoervis Medina walked a fine line all night on Friday at Alliant Energy Field, walking a season-high six batters but leaving them all stranded thanks to nine strikeouts as his Clinton LumberKings shut out the Quad Cities River Bandits, 5-0. Mario Martinez supported the effort with a two-run home run, finishing 2-for-4.

Medina (W, 5-0) stranded two on base in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth. He gave up just two hits over his 6.0 innings, a double by Edgar Lara in the second inning and a single by Robert Stock in the sixth inning.

Singles by Vinnie Catricala and Martinez put runners at the corners with two outs in the second inning and Clinton grabbed the 1-0 lead as Matt Cerione's grounder ate up shortstop Ted Obregon for an error, sending Catricala home.

The Kings would have to wait until the fifth to get to right-hander Justin Smith again as Cerione doubled off the wall in left and scored two batters later on an infield single by James Jones. Smith (L, 7-2) fell to the LumberKings for the second time this year as a result of two runs - one earned - on five hits over 4.1 innings.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the sixth as Martinez willed a breaking ball from lefty Dan Calhoun out to the berm in left for a two-run homer. The front-foot, off-balance blast was the 11th of the season for Martinez, his first since August 7.

Catricala added an RBI double to score Jones in the seventh, finishing the night 2-for-4. His hitting streak stands at a team-best 16 games, while his 74 RBI lead the club.

Left-hander Jose Jimenez, working for the second-straight night, turned in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Right-hander Brandon Josselyn, also working on zero day's rest induced three groundouts in a perfect non-save ninth. The shutout was Clinton's ninth this season.

The LumberKings took three of four from the Bandits in the meeting, winning the season-series, 11 games to eight. Clinton won six of the eight games on the pivotal homestand and are 2.5 games ahead of Kane County for the top playoff spot in the West.

The next challenge for the Kings is a five-game, four-day road series at O'Brien Field in Peoria, IL. They'll open it up against the Chiefs tomorrow night at 6:30 PM with left-hander Nick Czyz (4-4, 4.71) on the mound for his 12th start of the year.
