Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that RHP Suammy Baez and INF Dwayne Bailey have been assigned to the Kernels from Tempe and Salt Lake, respectively, and that INF Michael Demperio has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Friday.
Baez, 21, was signed by the Angels as a non-drafted free agent on February 15, 2007 and resides in San Cristobal, DR. He led the AZL in 2009 with 23 relief appearances and posted a 3-2 record, 2.70 ERA with one save in 30 IP. He moved into a starting role with the AZL Angels this season and posted a 4-4 record and 2.68 ERA in 13 starts at Tempe, allowing 78 hits, 31 runs (22 earned), 17 walks and striking out 70 in 74 IP.
Bailey has made the tour of Angels' affiliates this season, playing in Cedar Rapids, Rancho Cucamonga, Arkansas and most recently, Salt Lake, where he hit .167 (3-18) with 2 RBI in nine games for the Bees. The Angels drafted Bailey in the 21st round of the 2008 Free Agent Draft out of the University of Central Florida.
Demperio has played 18 games for the Kernels this year in a utility role. He suffered the concussion after being hit in the head by a pitch in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Peoria.
With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with three players currently on the disabled list.
