Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - With 6,290 sets of eyes watching, the Hot Rods strode into the record books on Friday night with a 12-6 win over the Lake County Captains at Bowling Green Ballpark. Three club records were smashed as Bowling Green snapped a four-game losing skid in front of the biggest crowd of the 2010 campaign.

The night started off roughly as the Captains jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead against right-hander Alexander Colome. After a three-run home run by Chris Kersten punctuated the inning, Colome settled down, sparking his teammates to take over.

The Hot Rods comeback started in the bottom of the first with a lead-off walk by Bennett Davis, who advanced to third on a single by Ty Morrison. As Morrison stole second base a few pitches later, Davis was able to score when the throw sailed askew to cut the Hot Rods deficit to 4-1.

They tied the game an inning later as Lake County starter Trey Haley continued to battle his command. He issued a walk to Burt Reynolds to begin the inning. After a steal by Reynolds, Robi Estrada laced a double to plate Reynolds for the Hot Rods second run of the game.

Another pair of walks followed before Haley struck out Morrison for the inning's second out. That's when Brett Nommensen drew a sixth walk against Haley, forcing in the Hot Rods third run. A fourth run scored to tie the game on an error on a potential inning-ending double play.

Haley would make it through just 2.2 innings as he gave up two walks and a double with two outs in the third inning. Newcomer Nick Kirk didn't fare any better, walking the first two batters to force in another pair of runs to give the Hot Rods a 6-4 lead.

Bowling Green added to its lead in the fifth, thanks to more free passes. Dustin Biell and Davis each walked to begin the frame. Davis' walk was his record-tying fourth of the game. He would score, as would Biell, when Brett Nommensen doubled into the right field corner to bump their lead to 8-4.

The final runs for Bowling Green scored in the last of the seventh inning. Davis began the inning with a record-setting fifth walk followed by a single and another walk to load the bases. Julio Cedeno singled to left to force in one run, followed by a bases loaded walk to Ryan Wiegand. Leading 10-4 at that point, Mark Thomas bounced into a force out before Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly and Estrada single to give Bowling Green a 12-4 lead.

Aaron Dott earned the win for the Hot Rods, coming on in relief of Colome in the fourth inning. He worked 3.1 shutout frames to improve to 4-4 on the year. The lefty finished with seven strikeouts while walking two. He is now 3-0 with one save as a reliever, lowering his ERA out of the bullpen to 2.10 (eight ER in 34.1 IP.)

Colome took a no-decision for the Hot Rods, working 3.2 frames. He allowed four runs and four hits, all in the first inning, while picking up seven K's and a trio of walks. Scott Shuman closed the game down with two innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs with four more punch-outs.

In the record books, three items are noteworthy. Colome, Dott, and Shuman combined for 18 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 17 set on September 3, 2009. Offensively, Hot Rods hitters walked a total of 16 times to shatter the club's old record of 11 (May 26, 2009). Bennett Davis drew five of those walks becoming the first Hot Rod to pull off the feat.

Even the team's attendance was major news as 6,290 fans watched the walk-fest on Friday night. It was the ninth standing-room only crowd of the season, setting the bar as the most-watched game of the year in the process. It's the fourth 6,000-plus crowd in team history, second only to the 6,886 fans that attended the Hot Rods first game on April 17, 2009.

The Hot Rods now turn their attention to What Could've Been Night: Part Deux presented by Southern States on Saturday night. The Hot Rods exploration of what-if scenarios returns with the first 1,000 fans receiving Cave Shrimp Bobble-Tail Collectibles. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM for Season Ticket holders and 6 PM for the general public.

LHP Kyle Lobstein (8-7, 4.24) opens the series agains the Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres) on Saturday night. He'll face Fort Wayne RHP Matt Lollis (4-1, 1.80). You can listen to the game on the radio with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 6:50 PM on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
