
Kernels Pound Out 15 Hits In 9-4 Win Over Silver Hawks

April 20, 2007 - Peter Bourjos went 4-4 with a triple and 2 RBI to lead a 15-hit attack as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks, 9-4, in South Bend on Friday night.
Hank Conger went 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI and Matt Sweeney extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 2-4 with 2 RBI.
Kernels starter David Herndon (2-0) scattered seven hits over six innings and he struck out six and allowed only two runs. Four Kernel relievers, Pedro Herrera, Barret Browning, Aaron Cook and Warner Madrigal combined to pitch the final three innings.
Chris Pettit and Julio Perez each had two hits.
South Bend starter Cesar Valdez (0-2) gave up five runs (three earned) and nine hits in 5-2/3 innings and was tagged with the loss.
The Kernels broke open a 5-4 game in the top of the ninth as Sweeney hit a 2 RBI single, Conger added an RBI single and Brett Martinez had an RBI ground out to make the final 9-4.
The Kernels now head to Midland, MI and the new Dow Diamond to start a four game series with the Great Lakes Loons. RHP Jeremy Haynes (2-0) is the Kernels scheduled starter as the game is scheduled for a 6 pm start.
The Kernels return home and host Lansing for a four game set on Thursday, April 26 at 6:30 pm.
