Peoria Chiefs News Release

Midland, MI - The Peoria Chiefs survived two late scoring threats to beat the Great Lakes Loons 3-0 Friday night and sweep the four game series. The win, their fifth straight, moves the Chiefs into a three-way tie for second place in the Western Division at 8-5.

Just as in the first three games of the series, the Chiefs got on the board first, scoring an unearned run against Loons starter Cody White in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Matt Camp reached on an error by shortstop Preston Mattingly and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Wellington Castillo singled to right to bring Camp home with the game's first run. White rebounded to get out of the inning and leave two Chiefs runners in scoring position.

The first two batters reached against Jose Ceda in the Loons' second but the Chiefs starter pitched out of trouble. Peoria doubled their lead in the top of the third. Catcher Wellington Castillo hit a towering solo homer that just got over the wall in left and into the berm. Castillo's second homer of the young season put the Chiefs on top 2-0.

Great Lakes threatened in the eighth when Kenley Jansen and Bridger Hunt drew back to back walks off Chiefs reliever Julio Castillo. Catcher Wellington Castillo made an outstanding play to force Janson at third on a bang-bang bunt play for the first out. With two on, Rocky Roquet got Mattingly to fly out and struck out Elian Herrera looking to end the inning and leave the tying run at first base.

Peoria added an insurance run in the ninth off reliever Garrett White. Yusuf Carter led off the frame with a solo homer to the opposite field, his first of the year, giving the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. Great Lakes led off with a single and a walk to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth. But Roquet collected back to back strikeouts and then got Jansen to ground out to end the game.

Ceda retired 14 straight Loons after giving up a base hit in the second. He struck out five and did not issue a walk in six shutout innings. Jake Renshaw made his first Chiefs appearance of the season and allowed one walk with a strikeout in his one shutout inning. Julio Castillo walked the only two batters he faced before Rocky Roquet came out of the bullpen and picked up his third save of the season with two drama filled innings of work and three strikeouts.
