Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BELOIT, WI -- Danny did it again. For the second time this week, Danny Valencia hit a big home run to spark the Beloit Snappers to a victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. His three run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and the Snappers wound up with an 8-3 win Friday night at Pohlman Field.
Beloit (6-5) scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning. A walk and an error put runners on the corners with no outs. A passed ball against catcher Jair Fernandez allowed the first Beloit run to score. Later in the inning, Chris Parmelee drove in the second run with a two out single.
The Rattler hitters tied the game in the top of the fifth. Alex Liddi started the inning with a single. Leury Bonilla followed with an RBI double. But, Bonilla was only at third base with two outs. Ougi Diaz came through with the big hit, a triple down the left field line, to drive in Bonilla with the tying run.
Wisconsin (2-9) took the lead in the top of the seventh. Liddi started the rally again, this time with a lead off triple. Bonilla hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Liddi with the go ahead run. But, the lead did not last long.
Reliever Justin Souza entered the game and gave up an infield single and a bunt single to the first two batters of the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Garrett Olson singled in the tying run. Valencia was next to hit for the Snappers.
In Tuesday's game at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium, Valencia took Souza deep with a solo home run that started a Snapper comeback for a 5-2 win. On Friday at Pohlman Field, Valencia drilled a three-run homer to center on a 3-1 pitch from Souza to put the Snappers back in front.
Wisconsin had two on with one out in the top of the eighth. Dan Leatherman entered the game and struck out Kuo Hui Lo on a check swing. Rattler manager Jim Horner disagreed with base umpire Bronson Martinez and was almost immediately ejected. Leatherman closed out the inning by striking out Liddi.
Joe Benson drove in two more runs for Beloit with a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth to make it 8-3 and Leatherman retired the Rattlers in order in the ninth to pick up his first save.
The Rattlers begin a four game series with the defending Midwest League Champion West Michigan Whitecaps Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Rattlers will send Anthony Varvaro (0-1, 10.57) to the mound as their starting pitcher. The Whitecaps have Duane Below (0-1, 6.14) scheduled as their starter. Game time is 4:00pm EDT/3:00pm CDT.
