Kane County Cougars News Release

Lansing, MI - The Kane County Cougars have suffered defeat this season in almost every way imaginable, and Friday night's 4-3, heartbreaking loss to the Lansing Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park ended a nine-game road trip during which the Cougars won the first game and lost the next eight. They trailed the Lugnuts 4-0 after six innings before the offense rebounded and another comeback fell short. Cougars pitchers James Heuser, Jason Fernandez and Branden Dewing held the Lugnuts to five hits, but three of them were home runs. Heuser, who lasted five innings for the first time this season, gave up a two-run shot in the third to Travis Snider and a solo blast in the fourth to Josh Bell for a 3-0 count. Heuser (0-1) gave up three hits, walked two and fanned five in the loss. Fernandez allowed a homer to Brian Pettway in the bottom of the sixth before settling down and passing the torch to Branden Dewing for a scoreless relief frame.

The Cougars' offense, which mustered two hits through five innings against Lugnuts starter Zach Dials, came to life in the seventh against Edward Rodriguez. Greg Dowling tripled and scored on Gustavo Rosendo's grounder. Then Christian Vitters walked, took third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Alex Valdez to make it 4-2.

Larry Cobb commenced the eighth with a solo homer to bring the Cougars to within one at 4-3, but Paul Phillips stepped in to end the inning and then struck out the side in the ninth to end the game and notch his second save. Dials (2-0) picked up the win.
