South Bend starter Brett Anderson (2-1) out-dueled Kernels starter Trevor Bell (0-2) as the Silver Hawks handed the Kernels a 3-1 loss Thursday night in South Bend.

The game took only one hour and 54 minutes to complete and was the first loss for the Kernels (6-4) on their current eight game road trip. The win was the first for South Bend (2-9) at home this year.

Bell had a quality start, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings of work with three strikeouts and only one walk.

Anderson was a bit better, holding the Kernels to four hits and one run over seven innings and he struck out eight with only one walk.

The Kernels scored their only run on a Wilberto Ortiz sacrifice fly, scoring Brett Martinez in the top of the fourth.

South Bend dh Daniel Perales was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to pace the Silver Hawks.

Julio Perez went 2 for 4 with a double to lead the Kernel offense. Doug Brandt gave up two hits and struck out three in two innings of relief.

The Kernels and Silver Hawks wrap up their four game series Friday night in South Bend as David Herndon (1-0) starts for the Kernels. Cedar Rapids then heads to Midland, MI for four games with the Great Lakes Loons before heading back to Veterans Memorial Stadium on April 26th.
