
Kernels Pound Lugnuts, 14-4

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Lansing Lugnuts combined to pound out 33 hits Tuesday afternoon, but the Kernels got the better end of a 14-4 decision at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win salvages a split of the series for the Kernels.
With the score tied 2-2 in the fifth, Cedar Rapids exploded for eight runs while sending 11 batters to the plate. Flint Wipke drew a bases loaded walk to give the Kernels the 3-2 lead. Josh Davis then ripped a two-run single to make it 5-2. Stantrel Smith followed him by blasting a three-run homer to left field to push the lead to 8-2. Marco Albano's two-run shot later in the frame capped off the scoring to open a 10-2 lead.
The Kernels added four more runs in the seventh. Smith cracked his second homer of the game, this time a solo blast to left-center that made it 11-2. Jordan Renz had an RBI single and Anderson Rosario had a two-run double to make it 14-2.
Lansing's Joey Metropoulos smacked his tenth homer of the year in the loss, an eighth inning solo homer that made it 14-3. Metropoulos finished the game 3-for-5.
The Lugnuts had tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI hits by Jason Armstrong and Brian Pettway.
Robert Mosebach (9-6) got the win for the Kernels, throwing six innings and allowing 10 hits and two runs.
A.J. Wideman (1-4) suffered the loss, throwing 4 1/3 innings and surrendering six hits and five runs.
Lansing (59-54, 19-27) will take Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday at South Bend. Casey McKenzie (0-4, 4.33) will take the ball for the Lugnuts, while Adam Howard (6-3, 4.19) will hurl for the SilverHawks. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
