Shutout by Fort Wayne, Whitecaps lose series

COMSTOCK PARK - Erik Averill pitched longer than he has all season for the Whitecaps but took the loss in a 2-0 shutout win for Fort Wayne. As a result, West Michigan loses a series for just the fifth time this year and for the first time since June 26-28 when South Bend took two out of three at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Wizards took three-of-four from the ‘Caps in this series.

Averill allowed nine hits but just two runs in eight innings of work. The loss snapped of a steak of three straight starts with a win for the lefty.

Mike Hollimon became the first Whitecap ever with a quadruple double. Hollimon tripled in the first inning to complete the feat. He currently has 27 doubles, 10 triples, 13 home runs and 15 stolen bases.

Drew Davidson and Daryl Jones each had RBI doubles for the Wizards to provide the margin of victory.

The shutout was the seventh thrown this season against the Whitecaps.

Greg Burke pitched the first 6.2 innings for the Wizards followed by a third of an inning from Brandon Higelin, and full innings from each Alfredo Fernandez and John Madden, who earned a save for the second consecutive game.
