Garza Gets The Call

August 8, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

The Minnesota Twins announced today they were calling up former Snappers right-hander and top pitching prospect Matt Garza to the big leagues. The Twins selected the contract of Garza and optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Smith back to Triple-A Rochester. Garza is expected to join the Twins in Detroit on Tuesday night. He likely will make his Major League debut on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays with the fifth spot in the rotation now open, though the Twins have yet to announce it.

The Twins selected Garza in the first round of the 2005 June draft. He was the 25th overall selection. In 2005 he made four starts for the Elizabethton Twins, going 1-1 with 3.66 ERA, before being promoted to Beloit. With the Snappers he was 3-3 with a 3.54 ERA and recorded 64 strikeouts in 64 innings of work. In his 23 total starts in the Minors this season, Garza is 14-4 with a 1.99 ERA. He has also recorded 154 strikeouts and issued just 32 walks in 135 2/3 innings.

Garza becomes the 100th player to play at the Major League level since the Beloit franchise was started in 1982. The Snappers are celebrating their 25th Season in 2006. Beloit was affiliated with the Milwaukee Brewers for the first 23 seasons before signing a two-year Player Development Contract (PDC) with the Twins. Garza is the first Snappers player during the Minnesota Twins affiliation to reach the majors.
