Kernels smack four home runs in 14-4 win over Lansing
August 8, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels snapped a five game noon game losing streak in a big way as Stantrel Smith hit two home runs and Marco Albano and Jordan Renz added one more each as the Kernels beat Lansing, 14-4, to earn a series split.
The Kernels set season highs for hits (17), home runs (4), RBI (14) and tied season highs in runs scored (14) and total bases (31). Heading into tonight's MWL games, Renz is tied for the league lead in home runs with 21 and is third with 72 RBI.
Stantrel Smith finished the day 2 for 5 with his 2 home runs and 4 RBI. Josh Davies, Anderson Rosario and Marco Albano chipped in with 2 RBI each. Every Kernels starter finished the game with at least one hit. Josh Davies lead all Kernels with three hits in a 3 for 5 effort.
The offensive explosion made Kernels starter Robert Mosebach's job much easier as he picked up his ninth win of the season. Moose gave up ten hits over six innings but struck out four and the Kernels turned two key double plays to help the Lugnuts strand 11 runners.
The Kernels improve to 20-25 and 51-64 on the season as they head into Thursday's series opener with Wisconsin. Lansing drops to 19-27 and 59-54 overall.
After a league-wide off day, the Kernels welcome the Wisconsin TimberRatters to Cedar Rapids for a four game series. Anthony Ortega (1-4) is the scheduled starter for Cedar Rapids and Marwin Vega (3-8) will start for Wisconsin.
A big night at the stadium is planned on Thursday as the Kernels will be wearing special pink jerseys as part of Oncology Associates Cancer Awareness Night. Prior to the game, the Kernels will recognize all cancer survivors on the field prior to the game and the first 500 fans through the gates receive a free pink baseball from Oncology Associates. The pink jerseys will be sold during the game via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit cancer research and the Relay for Life.
Thursday's are also 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursdays and fans can enjoy 12 ounce draft beer and soda and slushies for just a buck and bottled soda and water are two bucks. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
